10-Year Countdown to 2020

November is a big month for InterfaceFLOR. On November 9th, we will unveil our Mission Zero Milestones for 2010, a landmark announcement that will set the tone for our next 10 years at InterfaceFLOR. From November 17th-19th, we’ll unveil a framework for our sustainability mission at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. We want to include you – our social media fans, followers and loyal readers – in celebrating these milestones. Here’s a sneak peak at what we’ll be bringing you over the next month:

  • 2010 Mission Zero Milestones – 15 years ago we challenged ourselves to get completely off oil by 2020. We have 10 years left to accomplish our goal. This progress report will set the pace for the next decade at InterfaceFLOR. Over the next few weeks, we’ll give you sneak peeks at the report and ask you the very same hard questions we’ve asked ourselves.
  • Greenbuild International Conference & Expo – One of our favorite events of the year, we’ll be showing at #Greenbuild in Chicago. What are we showing exactly? Well, it’s a surprise. You’ll have to follow, Like or subscribe to our social media channels for clues.
  • Our Sustainability Mission – With 10 years left to Mission Zero, it’s time to change the way we think about sustainability. Follow our showing at Greenbuild, where we’ll unveil a different way of talking about our mission.
  • New Homes on the Social Web – We have a new and improved blog, a new design for our Twitter feed and a brand new YouTube channel. More ways to stay in touch with us on your terms.
  • All month long, look for special promotions, engaging activities and exclusive content on our Facebook, Twitter and Blog channels.

This company makes decisions and commitments based on the urgency of an issue - not on how easy we think a goal will be to achieve.

InterfaceFLOR’s Journey Toward Mission Zero®

Ray Anderson, Interface founder and chairman, changed the course of our company back in 1994 after reading The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken. His “Mid-Course Correction” put us on a path toward eliminating our environmental footprint by 2020, a journey we now call Mission Zero®. It has forever changed our company, our industry and the lives of many both in and outside of Interface.

For us, sustainability isn’t just about offering a product with recycled content or meeting industry standards or environmental certifications. We take a holistic approach toward sustainability that touches all aspects of our business and influences every decision we make.

We use Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to help us evaluate the environmental impact of materials, processes, products and even businesses. As John Bradford, our Chief Innovations Officer, says, “LCA allows us to see our choices through Mother Nature’s lens.” Hear more on how we use LCA in our business decisions from John.

We now use LCA as a basis for Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®): a full public disclosure of a product’s ingredients, use of energy and material resources, and environmental impacts during its life cycle.

  • InterfaceFLOR was the first carpet manufacturer in North America to have a third-party-verified EPD for its Convert™ Design Platform products with type 6,6 nylon.
  • We now also have a verified EPD for our Convert products with type 6 nylon.
  • See them at The Green Standard
