Twitter Q&A with Ray Anderson

Here’s a transcript of the Twitter Q&A with our founder Ray Anderson from Tuesday night during the opening of Greenbuild 2009.

@InterfaceFLORna We’re sitting here with @RayCAnderson. Please send in your questions now! #greenbuild http://yfrog.com/j7g5ij

@tomklein @interfaceflorna how can I change my company to be more sustainable if the executives and even the board of directors just don’t get it?

@InterfacFLORna @tomklein maybe you should consider changing companies!

@InterfaceFLORna From @RayCAnderson - Those that only talk about what they’ve done instead of how much there is to do are greenwashing

@tomklein @interfaceflorna How do you see the Smart Grid and sustainability coming together - for companies and individuals?

@InterfaceFLORna @tomklein I see them coming together to get us oli, coal and nuclear, which is the ultimate objective. The sooner the better. #greenbuild

@GreenIntel @interfaceFLORna Ray, what’s the most exciting thing you have seen in green this year?

@InterfacFLORna @GreenIntel The energy bill working its way through Congress to make carbon carry a price that reflects its true cost = green letter day

@greenskeptic @InterfaceFLORna Ask Ray what he says to people who think sustainability costs but doesn’t pay.

@InterfaceFLORna @greenskeptic it doesn’t cost it does pay. Read chapter 5 of my new book. Waste reduction has netted us 400M plus in savings. #greenbuild

@elaineishere @InterfaceFLORna Ray, If carbon doesn’t get monetized & regulation moves too slowly, will small green actions make a difference? #greenbuild

@InterfaceFLORNa @elaineishere Absolutely! The starting place is do something. Then do something else.

The Elephant in the Room is Oil

For a petro-intensive industrial company (for both energy and materials), “Off Oil” is a big deal and a monumental undertaking. It means severing the umbilical cord to the earth for virgin petroleum, and we have accepted that challenge at Interface. At the same time “Off Oil” is also a proxy for an even more ambitious and challenging commitment that we have made under the umbrella of “Mission Zero”; that is, to get off ALL fossil fuel-derived energy (coal) and materials (natural gas) by 2020. That means using renewable energy, and closed loop, recycled petro-derived or naturally renewable materials. And beyond those commitments, we intend to eliminate any other negative environmental impacts our operations and products may still have, as we strive for zero environmental footprint. Today, after 15 1/2 years of such striving, we are nearly two-thirds of the way there with ten and a half years to go. We’d be pleased to meet you at the top of Mount Sustainability in 2020. We have it on good authority that there’s plenty of room at the top for zero footprints.
